The Grotto
Located on Saipan’s rugged northeast coast, this unforgettable shore dive begins with a
steep, one hundred and ten step descent to the bottom of a collapsed subterranean chamber.
Once the chamber’s ceiling, a large limestone rock now sits in a pool of crystal clear
water and serves as the entry and exit point for divers as they explore this popular
cavern dive. Under the surface, light from three different exit holes plays magically
within the darkness of the cave while guiding divers to the open sea. Exiting these
tunnels reveals towering limestone cliffs being pounded by the surf above and a steep
sloping wall below. With visibility consistently over 100 feet, it is easy to see
turtles taking a breath at the surface while watching schools of trevally cruise the
depths and currents. Back within the cavern, predawn dives almost always deliver
sleeping turtles and small reef sharks as they seek protection from predators with better
things to do at night.
