Naftan Point
Departing Smiling Cove marina on the west side of the island, a 30-minute boat ride swings
you around to Saipan’s southern tip where divers experience one of the most rewarding wall
dives anywhere. Often bathed in gentle currents, the water here is always crystal clear.
Add brilliant afternoon sun and this south-facing wall is a photographer’s dream with
plenty of colorful corals and reef fish to saturate the senses. From the bottom of the
mooring line at 45 feet, divers have the choice of a shear drop-off to the east with no
bottom in sight or a vast sloping coral garden to the west. Pillow stars, feather dusters
and dartfish cling to the edge of the wall while curious filefish cruise the slopes and
schools of parrotfish dive bomb coral heads overpowering defenseless damselfish to munch on
algae-filled coral.
