Lau Lau Bay
Lined by lush green jungle, towering limestone cliffs and beautiful secluded beaches this
large bay on the east coast is home to one of Saipan’s most popular dive sites. A busy
spot during the day, the entry beach is remotely located and accessed by a bumpy dirt road
cutting through the jungle at the ocean’s edge. Away from the car park, experience solitude
and tranquility while exploring the beach or tide pools of the fringing reef. Divers easily
drop into 15-foot deep coral corridors and, with the help of guide ropes, navigate the long,
often murky, channels to deeper, clearer water at the reef’s edge.
A long submerged pipe acts as an artificial reef for soft corals and anemones as it leads out over a gentle sloping bottom of silt and coral rubble that is home to many interesting creatures, including the frantic rockmover and yellowtail wrasse. Go slow and discover octopus, shrimpgobys and scorpionfish attempting to conceal themselves with camouflage and hiding spots. Back along the edge and atop the reef, hungry turtles are common while large colonies of anemonefish can be found among the swim throughs and sand channels that help make this one of the most diverse dive spots in Micronesia.
